I have recently built a gaming computer and didn't have enough money left over to buy a normal computer monitor so I had heard that you are ablr to use your tv as a monitor instead. I used a VGA cable to connect to my tv and it works fine but then a friend of mine told me that you would get better quality picture using a hdmi. I have a 24' Sansui lcd tv with 2 hdmi ports. I plugged in my hdmi cable into my tv and then plugged it into my hdmi out port on my motherboard but it didn't work.

I then tried to put it into the hdmi out port on my graphics card but that didn't work either. I also tried it on a 42' lcd Sansui tv but it didn't work. I'm at a loss on whether this brand of tv doesn't support using the hdmi input for a monitor or if some setting on my pc won't alow for it (it's a window 8 os) or what.

Please help with advice or tips. First solution would to be to try a different HDMI cable.

If that doesn't work, see if this helps: On the back of the TV the HDMI's are marked. Choose the one labeled computer. Make sure you go into your control panel and select your TV once you hook it up. StartControl PanelDisplayChange Display Settings.

Best of luck. I have done that. I've tried to change resolution setting and stuff but it just resets to the default setting even after it says 'all changes complete'. Thanks for your advice.

Got any more tips possibly? It would really help. First solution would to be to try a different HDMI cable. If that doesn't work, see if this helps: On the back of the TV the HDMI's are marked. Choose the one labeled computer.

Thanks 1) right click desktop 2) click screen resolution 3) If you see 2 screens with a 1 and a 2 in it, click the other display and select 'Extend these displays' in the pulldown menu 4) If it does NOT detect the second display, make sure the TV input is on the right one and hit the detect button Another tip, you can move the 1 and 2 screens by click-and-drag to other sides, so by moving the mouse all the way to the right it goes to the other screen, or all the way to the left. I found those on a forums, see if that helps. This is not just a Windows PC problem but rather a Sansui problem. Neither one of my HDMI ports will display anything that is plugged into them. My newest gaming rig to my Raspberry Pi. My 42' Sansui has no working HDMI's while the smaller tv will let you use an HDMI if you have no other display type cable plugged into it (ie cable coaxial). On that tv, if you unplug the cable coax then whatever is plugged in through HDMI pops up.

But on the 42' the HDMI ports do not work at all. Just an FYI for the OP. All of the other suggestions are the best answers for a normally functioning tv or PC/OS.

But this is not a normally functioning tv. Its a cheap tv with faulty HDMI ports. I only purchased these tv's for my grandfathers house because they were wickedly cheap and had to take them back when he moved out.

So I set these up downstairs and in the spare room. The whole point was to have a mini computer attached to make them internet connected while also serving as a tv. Its not possible with either one. I will be throwing them away.
